Waiting For Godot By Beckett Authors use different techniques in their wittings. Samuel Beckett uses allusions and references to characters to help the reader understand what the characters represent. In his drama Waiting for Godot, Beckett's two main characters, Estragon and Vladimir, are symbolized as man. Separate they are two different sides of man, but together they represent man as a whole. In Waiting for Godot, Beckett uses Estragon and Vladimir to symbolize man's physical and mental state. Estragon represents the physical side of man, while Vladimir represents the intellectual side of man. In each way these two look for answers shows their side of man. Estragon has his shoes. Vladimir has his hat. When Estragon takes off his shoes ?he peers inside it, feels about inside it, turns it upside sown, shakes it...?1. Through this action it is relevant that Estragon is searching for something from his boot, but unable to recognize it. This symbolizes man's side of using physical ability to answer questions. Vladimir on the other hand continues to look into his hat. Vladirmir constantly ?Takes off his hat, peers inside it, feels about inside it, shakes it, puts it on again?2. Through this action Vladimir is shown to be searching for answers in his hat, which symbolizes his using knowledge and his intellectual capability for solving problems. Both Estragon and Vladimir are searching for what the reader assumes to be the key to life's problems. When they continue to do this throughout the drama, it expresses the fact that they are searching and will continue to search until they find what they are looking for. Vladimir is more practical, and Estragon is more of a romantic. In the drama, Estragon wants to talk about his dreams. Vladimir doesn't want to. He can not stand to hear about the dreams that Estragon has. When Estragon wakes up from falling asleep he says ?I had a dream?. Vladimir answers with ?Don't tell me?3. Another example is that Estragon often forgets events as soon as they happen or within a day, while Vladimir, on the other hand, remember past events4. This is shown when Pozzo and Lucky enter into the scene in the second act. Estragon and Vladimir see two men coming. Vladimir recognizes it as Pozzo, from the day before, but Estragon does not recognize him. The conversation starts with Vladimir: Poor Pozzo I knew it was him Who? Godot. But it's not Godot. It's not Godot? It's not Godot. Then who is it? It's Pozzo5. This exchange in dialog shows that Estragon does not recognize Pozzo, and Vladimir has to tell Estragon who it is. The two of them are dependent on each other. Estragon is beaten every night by mysterious men. Vladimir acts as his protector. He sings to him, helps him take off his boots, and covers him with his jacket6. Every night they part, yet they find each other every morning and start another day of waiting. In each act, Estragon and Vladimir talk about hanging themselves form the tree. During this exchange of words, Estragon suggest that they hang themselves from a near by tree. Vladimir is the one who is particle and explains why they can't hang themselves. The physical side and the intellectual side is shown through Estragon's and Vladimir's actions, as well as their words. They have a friend ship that is bonded by their differences. Without one another they would be lost, just like without the intellectual side of man, the physical side would be lost, and visa versa. The author evidently illustrated the first theme through all storyââ¬â¢s main characters as each of them exhibited a personality that is different from the initial impression they gave when they first appeared. For example, Torvald, at first, appears to be a caring and devoted husband to Nora, the protagonist. However, at the end of the story, it turns out that he is a very shallow man who only cares about his own career and that he never desired to fulfill his promise to share with Nora the burdens of their marriage. In addition, Dr. Rankââ¬â¢s frequent visits to Nora and Torvald appeared to be a gesture of friendship towards the couple. But late in the story it was discovered that his true motives for visiting them was because he is in love with Nora. Moreover, Krogstad initially appeared to be a vengeful and manipulative extortionist until he was reunited with his love, Mrs.à Linde, wherein he showed that he has a kind and generous heart. More importantly, Nora initially gave an impression that she was a selfish and foolish girl. However, it is soon discovered that Nora made a large sacrifice by secretly borrowing money in order to maintain their marriage. From the themes presented in the story, it can said that people are not always what they first appear to be. The story also showed that people can show their true colors when you least expect them to do so. Moreover, the story basically highlights the reality that wives in todayââ¬â¢s modern society, play a sacrificial and major role in a marriage, which is normally dominated by the husband. This was best illustrated by the marriage of Nora and Torvald, in which the latter refused to accept the fact that it was Nora who saved their marriage by secretly borrowing money when in fact it was his role as a husband to do so. In other words, the roles of women have evolved over the past years and they are no longer dominated by men.

You must know how to use the knife and fork of discovery. To know the boundaries is to know style. You have learned the technique of writing (or eating a theme paper). Congratulations to yourself! You are well on your way to enlightenment or in the very least employment! Ok then, so you are well acquainted with the boundaries of the theme and have even picked up a few interesting techniques along the way. Now you must cross over the borders... invade the undiscovered country of whatever monster (forms) lie beyond. It is easy to cross the borders, just take a step and your over; and then... what? You definitely do not want to look out of the window and describe what you see, that would be too much like that masterpiece of ambiguity "Untitled". You have nowhere to turn to so you ask your sleeping cats if they have any clue as to what lies beyond the theme (just in case there is some modicum of truth between the myth and the reality). Dada-dee, Dada-dum... Ok, so you decide that writing is about boundaries, about how a form is contained, and in themes boundaries help you to express ideas -- Right? Maybe to express ideas about what lies beyond the theme you have to cross more boundaries. Cool, you decide that you will not use pronouns; or better yet, you will interchange pronouns -- I, You, He, she, It, We, They (and sometimes "Y" and and "W") -- just randomly substitute one word for another. Meaning looses all sense of subject importance. How much MEANING do you really want to convey or understand? [INSERT METAPHOR HERE] Ok then , so you think "MEANING", Dada-dee, Dada-dum. Clarity is in the eyes of the beholders and you feel beholden to whomever said that. Words come floating into your room, they circumnavigate the breath of your understanding and settle next to your sleeping cats... Phonemes, paroles, logocentrism, signs and signifiers... RATS! Words have a connoted meaning to the reader. A random placement of the articles of language will move you outside of the borders; but into an Eitherland of gibberish.

The Robots Rebellion By Keith E. Stanovich - 897 Words
Consciousness a term explained as being aware of all surroundings, emerging from the functions of the brain. When a person gets used to something they may be able to think of other things at the same time, until a change happens, then they regain their consciousness to what they were doing. This essay is to further explore the target which is the slides from lecture 17 consciousness using the slides Meanings and automatization by using examples from the book ââ¬Å" The Robots Rebellionâ⬠by Keith E. Stanovich, which is the base to further explain and expand on these points. Consciousness can be linked to multiple things, such as how we do things, why we do things and anything that is related to being aware or awake. When a person is conscious of their behaviour, actions and abilities, they are then capable of accomplishing anything without any difficulties. When genes are produced and replicated the human body is then aware of what to do, causing the brain to become stronger. In the book it mentions how we are aware of the idea that we are the vehicles and our genes are the replicators. Genes are seen as the most powerful but as the brain becomes more highly developed it takes over more policy decisions, using learning and simulation to overrule. Therefore showing that when a human is conscious of the power of genes they are able to take over that task.
